MS is a disease with unpredictable symptoms that vary in intensity. While some people suffer from fatigue and numbness, severe MS can cause paralysis, vision loss and impaired brain function.

Visual problems are one of the most common symptoms of MS. Inflammation affects the optic nerve and impairs central vision. This can cause blurred vision, double vision or vision loss.

Chronic pain and involuntary muscle spasms are also common in MS.  The MS Atlas, a joint project between the World Health Organization and the International MS Federation, indicates that, while global data varies, 20-60% of people with MS also suffer from chronic pain.

Chronic fatigue occurs when the nerves of the spinal cord deteriorate. Fatigue usually comes on suddenly and lasts for weeks before it improves. At first, the weakness is most noticeable in the legs.

Dizziness and problems with coordination and balance can decrease the mobility of a person with MS. Your doctor may refer to them as walking difficulties. People with MS often experience dizziness and lightheadedness, or feeling as if everything is spinning (vertigo). These symptoms often occur when you stand up.

End-stage multiple sclerosis symptoms

The most frequent clinical form is the one that presents with outbreaks or relapses with subsequent remission. A flare or relapse is the appearance of a symptom of neurological origin due to a lesion of the central nervous system that persists for more than 24 hours.

MS affects each person differently, so it is not always easy to diagnose. Some people have many symptoms, while others have few; in some the symptoms are mild, while in others they may be more severe; in some people, symptoms may come and go, while in others, symptoms may persist over time.

Others are immunosuppressive treatments, so called because they “lower the defenses” in such a way that it depresses the ability to produce inflammation (positive in the case of MS) but also the ability to fight infections (resulting in a higher risk for the patient). These are considered as second-line treatments or in aggressive MS from the onset. Among them is Natalizumab (Tysabri) administered in the hospital once a month intravenously. The most serious adverse effect is the possible development of a CNS infection by a virus called Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy (affects less than 1% of treated patients). Another is Fingolimod (Gilenya) taken one capsule a day orally. The first dose is given in the hospital with cardiac monitoring for 6 hours because of the possibility of slowing of the heart rate. It can increase the frequency of certain viral infections and blood pressure.

The pattern of the way a person walks is called gait. Many of the different types of gait abnormalities occur without the person’s control. Most, but not all, are due to some physical condition. Some gait abnormalities are known by name.

Abnormal gait can be caused by diseases in different areas of the body.General causes of abnormal gait may include:This list does not include all causes of unsteady gait.SPECIFIC Gait CAUSESFestal gait:Spastic (scissors) gait:Steppage gait:Waddling gait:Ataxic or broad-based gait:Apraxic gaitHome care

Treatment of the underlying cause usually improves the gait. For example, gait abnormalities caused by trauma to part of the leg will improve as the leg heals.Physical therapy almost always helps with short- and long-term gait disorders. Therapy will reduce the risk of falls and other injuries. In the case of abnormal gait that presents with a conversion disorder, counseling and support from family members is strongly recommended. For festal gait:For scissors gait:For spastic gait:For steppage gait:For waddling gait, follow the treatment your health care provider has prescribed. For apraxic gait caused by hydrocephalus, gait may improve after treating brain swelling. When to contact a medical professional.
