Snoring awake

The U.S. National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences explains that laryngomalacia is an abnormality that usually presents at birth or during the first two weeks after birth. Babies with laryngomalacia are born with a larynx that collapses when they inhale. The result is noisy breathing (called stridor) that may be worse when the baby cries or sleeps on his or her back. This sound may resemble snoring.

Most cases (90%) usually resolve on their own by 20 months of age. Although the cause of laryngomalacia is unknown, it is important to seek medical attention if you suspect your newborn baby may have this condition.
