Festivalers News

Paul Reed, chief executive of the Independent Festivals Association, said the cancellation of Glastonbury does not necessarily mean the end of the festival season for 2021, but it does set off an alarm bell.

UK Music chief executive Jamie Njoku-Goodwin said, “This cancellation is devastating for all of us, both personally and professionally. It will have a serious impact on thousands of jobs across the country and many jobs in Glastonbury’s supply chains.”

Michael Kill, chief executive of the Nightlife Industries Association, said the cancellation will hurt festival-goers and businesses looking ahead to the summer season and the opportunity to trade in 2021.

Kill added: “The Government must recognize the impact of the negligible levels of support provided to the festival and events sector, and work on a solution that safeguards the sector and allows the 2021 festival and events season to take place across the UK.”

In early December, Live Nation’s president said his expectation was to return with big outdoor shows for the summer. Now, there are doubts about those ambitious plans, especially in Europe, where one big festival has already been canceled, and one of the summer’s major metal festivals, Hellfest, is in danger of being canceled as well.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said he wants to start testing large-scale events in the city as soon as the winter of 2021 passes, in the hope that rapid testing will expand enough to hold outdoor events in the summer.

Filmed at landmarks such as Pyramid Field and Stone Circle, the event will feature a variety of artists performing in support of the festival, including Coldplay, Damon Albarn, HAIM, IDLES, Jorja Smith, Kano, Michael Kiwanuka, Wolf Alice and DJ Honey Dijon, who will perform as part of a non-stop production. There will also be a number of unexpected surprise performances.

The event will benefit Glastonbury’s three main charity partners Oxfam, Greenpeace and WaterAid, as well as helping to ensure the festival can return in 2022. It will be broadcast in four time zones, with staggered livestreams for the UK, Europe, Africa and the Middle East, the East Coast of North America, Central and South America, the West Coast of North America, Australia, New Zealand and Asia.

A limited edition poster featuring the lineup will also be available; proceeds will go to Stagehand, the production crew relief fund that has received no financial support from the government during the pandemic.

Worthy Farm lies in a valley at the source of the Whitelake River, between two ridges of low limestone, part of the southern edge of the Mendip Hills. The area suffered in the past from a number of floods, although after flooding during the 1997 and 1998 festival, drainage was improved. This did not prevent flooding during the 2005 festival, but allowed the flood water to recede within hours.[4] The Highbridge branch of the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway ran through the estate on an embankment, but was dismantled in 1966 and now forms a main track through the site.[5] Another notable feature is the high-voltage power line that crosses the site from east to west.
