A rivet or rivet is a fastener used to permanently join two or more parts together. It consists of a cylindrical tube (the shank) which at its end has a head. The heads have a larger diameter than the rest of the rivet, so that when the rivet is inserted into a hole it can be fitted. It is used to join two different pieces, whether or not they are made of the same material.

Although it is one of the oldest methods of joining, today its importance as an assembly technique is greater than ever. This is due, in part, to the development of automation techniques that make the joining process cheaper. The fields in which riveting is most commonly used as a fastening method are, among many others: automotive, household appliances, furniture, hardware, military industry, sheet metal, official documents.

Rivet types and sizes

A rivet is a fastener used to permanently join two or more parts. It consists of a cylindrical tube with a head at the end. The heads have a larger diameter than the rest of the rivet, so that when the rivet is inserted into a hole it can be fitted. In short, it has the same fastening function as a screw, joining two parts permanently, except for some differences. A rivet can not be replaced as we could do with a screw, let’s say it is of a single use.

Impact riveting

Riveting is the most economical mechanical fastening method available for fixed joints between two parts. It is an extremely flexible technique as the fastening is done by placing a rivet in a hole and fitting it manually or with a riveting machine.

For any of the different types of rivets, we can find a great variety of applications and we will have to choose the right one depending on where we are going to apply it, that is why it is more important to classify them by material because depending on its constitution, we will need one or another:

Steel and copper rivets: the first ones are used to join steel materials or applications where high mechanical resistance is required and the copper ones are more indicated for brass or copper itself.

Manual riveting machine: the tool that cannot be missing in a DIY box. There is usually a difference between one-hand and two-hand riveting machines depending on the thickness of the sheet metal and the rivet to be used.
