The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) maintains an online portal with up-to-date estimates of processing times for most applications. Currently, the estimated wait time for a work permit is approximately 2.5 – 5 months.

Foreign nationals who wish to work in the United States must have express authorization given by the USCIS before beginning a job. Some visas naturally include work authorization, while others require a separate work permit. In either case, the visa holder will need an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) to demonstrate work status to prospective employers. Whether you need employment authorization, an EAD, or both, you can apply for these with Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization.

Derivative family members who live in the U.S. are also in incidental work authorized status. However, where USCIS grants the principal an EAD once U nonimmigrant status is approved, USCIS does not automatically grant derivative immediate family members an EAD once their visa is approved. Immediate family members will need to file a separate application to receive an EAD.

The purpose of the biometric appointment is for the Immigration Service to confirm your identity, as well as to verify your background and/or criminal record and, of course, to verify that you are the same person who filed the application and/or petition.
